Academic success is a top priority for NC State women's golf. Not only are the members of the team athletes, but also students. The words student and athlete, when combined, represent just what head coach Page Marsh strives to achieve with each new year ... success on and off the field of play and in and out of the classroom.
Success in both areas has been recognized at the university and conference levels. The women's golf team recently saw two student-athletes named to the inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference Academic team. Senior Nancy Mountcastle and junior Stephanie Derrey both earned recognition from the conference for their outstanding performances in the classroom. Both are business majors at NC State.
"As a coach, I am a firm believer in our players being student-athletes," said NC State head women's golf coach Page Marsh. "We encourage our players to excel in all areas in order to be well rounded and the best they can be. All of us need to be well prepared in life and have plans A, B & C when necessary. Academic success brings a great sense of accomplishment to a player. Accomplishments bring confidence and typically transcend from one area to another, which are important ingredients for any team."
Such achievements are measured using various criteria, dependent upon the entity awarding the honor. To be eligible for consideration for the ACC award, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
In addition to the conference honors, two Wolfpack players were named to the Dean's List in the spring semester (Mountcastle and Molly Birmingham), seven were tabbed NC State Scholar-Athletes (Birmingham, Derrey, Lauren Doughtie, Lauren Harling, Mountcastle, Joanna Saleeby and Jessica Vincent) and the team achieved a combined grade point average of over 3.0.
"I am continually impressed with how driven the women's golf team is towards academics," said Jody Moylan, the women's golf academic advisor. "Their success is a direct result of their dedication, and is to be commended."
Aided by the NC State Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes, along with a strong priority placed on academic success by the coaching staff, Wolfpack golf, as well as every NC State sport team, is put on a path towards achieving goals as a student and as an athlete.
"I am really proud of this team's accomplishments in the classroom and appreciate their efforts and those of the academic support staff who enabled our achievements," said Marsh.
With each new semester, new goals are set by the team and individually. As NC State women's golf continually places emphasis on academic success, the rewards are reaped two-fold.
