RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's tennis team picked up a bid to the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, May 3, as the tournament field was revealed live on ESPNEWS. Marking its first appearance in the dance since 1998, the Wolfpack will take on William & Mary during the first round of play on Friday, May 12. The Pack will compete in Richmond, Va., alongside its opponent, host Virginia Commonwealth and Richmond. The red and white enter the postseason with a 16-9 record, while the Tribe stands at 16-8.
A member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), William & Mary is currently ranked No. 24 nationally in the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings released on Monday, May 1. The Tribe features two ranked singles players, No. 19 Megan Moulton-Levy and No.84 Katarina Zoricic. The two combine to form the nation's No. 33 doubles pair.
NC State stands at No. 37 nationally, while freshman Shona Lee is ranked No. 93 in singles work. Two weeks ago Lee was named to the All-ACC women's tennis squad. The Pack's 16 wins on the year tie the program's record for most victories in a single season, originally established in 1998. In addition, NC State downed seven nationally ranked teams this season, including No. 25 Florida International, No. 64 Marshall, No. 64 Florida State, No. 33 Virginia, No. 66 Virginia Tech, No. 65 Boston College and No. 29 Maryland.
"I'm proud of this team and very excited for the girls, as well as this program," said head coach Hans Olsen. "But in addition to that, we have to prepare and get ready for a solid William & Mary team. We're excited to be included in the field and we're excited about the opportunity that this presents for our program."
Coincidentally enough, the Pack and the Tribe haven't squared off since the 1998 regular season, which is the last time NC State made the NCAA Tournament. William & Mary took that decision, 5-4.
