COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jon Still had three hits and drove in four runs Sunday to lead NC State to a 7-4 victory over Maryland and a sweep of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Shipley Field. The Wolfpack, which won the first two games of the series by scores of 11-4 and 15-4, has now won four ACC game in a row and improved to 30-10 overall and 13-5 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 16-23 overall and 6-15 in the ACC.
Joey Cutler (1-1) got the win for the Wolfpack with 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief of starter Eryk McConnell, who cruised through four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth. Cutler allowed one hit, struck out two and did not issue a walk. Sam Walls picked up his sixth save of the season with two innings of shutout relief. Walls allowed three hits, but struck out three without issuing a walk. Maryland starter Brett Cecil (4-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs, all earned, on 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Matt Camp led off the top of the first by grounding the first pitch of the game past diving third baseman Dan Melvin and into left field. Ramon Corona bunted Camp to second, and Still's two-out bloop single to right-center got the run home to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Pond led off the top of the fourth with a single through the left side. With one down, Caleb Mangum grounded out, advancing Pond to second base. Cecil hit Brian Aragon with a pitch to put runners on first and second, and Jonathan Diaz made it 2-0 with an RBI single to right, scoring Pond.
Corona, who came into the game 7-for-11 for the series, led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to left-center. Bates followed by hooking a soft line-drive double into the left-field corner. Still drove Bates in with an opposite-field double. Pond flied to right field to move Still to third, and Matt Mangini made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Maryland got back in the game in the bottom of the fifth. Jon Greenwich drew a one-out walk leading off. Nick Jowers grounded to first to move Greenwich to second, and Steve Braun drilled a triple into the right-field corner to drive in Greenwich and put the Terrapins on the scoreboard. Wink Nolan followed with an infield single that Mangini dived for but could not catch. That drove in Braun to cut the lead to 5-2. Joe Palumbo singled through the left side and Chad Durakis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Melvin drove in a pair of runs with a single to left-center to make it a one-run game at 5-4.
NC State made it 7-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Aaron Bates led off and was hit by a pitch, and Still drilled his second homer of the season, a two-run blast to straightaway center field.
NC State will return to action on Tuesday vs. East Carolina. Game time will be 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1), and on-line at gopack.com through Yahoo's subscription service.
