RALEIGH, N.C. - Matt Camp's two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Matt Payne with the winning run Saturday night as NC State fought back from a 7-1 deficit to defeat No. 14 Virginia 10-9 at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The win, NC State's fourth walk-off victory in its last 11games, lifted the No. 17 Wolfpack to 24-8 overall and 7-4 in the ACC. The Cavaliers fell to 24-7 overall and 6-5 in conference play. NC State closer Sam Walls (4-0) earned the win after pitching a hitless ninth inning, while striking out two. Virginia lefthander Casey Lambert (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs, all earned, on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four.
Camp led the Wolfpack, going 3-for-5, including a double, with two runs scored and two RBIs. Tom Hagan went a perfect 3-for-3 on the night for the Cavaliers. He finished with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs as well.
The Cavaliers struck first in the top of the third when Hagan led off with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Beau Seabury moved Hagan over into scoring position, and then a hard-hit single to left by Tim Henry allowed Hagan to score.
The Wolfpack answered in the bottom of the third. Matt Camp led off with a single of his own up the middle, then moved up on a wild pitch by Thompson. Aaron Bates hit a comebacker to the pitcher, but Camp eluded the tag in the ensuing rundown, putting runners on first and third with one down. Brian Aragon connected on a single through the right side next that scored Camp to tie the game at 1-1.
With a runner on first and two outs in the top of the fourth, Surkamp surrendered a single through the left side by Farrell that moved David Adams into scoring position. A double to left by Hagan a moment later drove in Adams to give Virginia the go-ahead run.
The Cavaliers added to the lead with a five-run fifth inning. Virginia loaded the bases off Wolfpack starter Eric Surkamp with a single to left-center by Greg Milat, a walk to Brandon March and a booted sacrifice attempt by Sean Doolittle. Gib Hobson came on in relief and gave up RBI singles to Adams and Brandon Guyer, then hit Jeremy Farrell with a pitch to force in another run. Hagan's RBI infield single chased Hobson, who left in favor of Adam McLaurin. Seabury's sacrifice bunt scored Guyer to make it 7-1, but McLaurin recorded the next two outs to get the Wolfpack out of the inning down 7-1.
The Wolfpack cut the lead down to three with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Ramon Corona hit a shot to right-center to drive in Aaron Cone, followed by an RBI single by Matt Mangini that scored Aragon. In the NC State sixth, Chris Engle scored off a ground out by Cone from Virginia reliever Michael Schwimer to make the score 7-4.
Hagan led off the seventh with a walk, stole second, took third on Seabury's third sacrifice bunt of the game, and scored on Henry's single to right to increase the lead to 8-4.
Marsh connected on a leadoff triple to right for the Cavaliers to start the eighth. Kyle Rutter came in to pitch for NC State and Doolittle drove in Marsh with a sacrifice fly to center on the next at-bat.
In the bottom of the inning, Engle hit a one-out double through the left side and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Diaz. Camp reached first on a bunt single, and a single to right by pinch-hitter Jon Still put runners on the corners and brought Bates to the plate. Bates crushed a 2-1 pitch from Cavaliers closer Casey Lambert over the wall in left field to move the Wolfpack within one run at 9-8.
NC State tied up the game in the bottom of the ninth when pinch-hitter Matt Payne came in to hit a two-out single up the middle, scoring Corona from second. Camp followed with a double high off the wall in left to drive in Payne with the winning run.
NC State will return to action on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park for the final game of the Atlantic Coast Conference series against Virginia. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
