CLEMSON, S.C. - Stephen Faris tossed eight shutout innings and Tyler Colvin doubled twice and drove in two runs Sunday to lead No. 8 Clemson to a 6-2 victory over No. 12 NC State in the final game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Kingsmore Stadium.
Clemson, which completed a three-game sweep with the victory, extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 16-6 overall, 3-3 in the ACC. NC State, which lost its fourth consecutive game, fell to 21-8 overall and 5-4 in the ACC. The four-game losing streak is the Pack's longest since April 2004, a streak that also included a three-game sweep at Clemson. The Tigers now have swept the Wolfpack five times in NC State's last nine tripes to Clemson, dating back to the 1990 season.
Faris (2-0) picked up the win with eight relatively easy innings, allowing no runs on four hits. He struck out five, did not issue a walk, and used just 93 pitches. Andrew Brackman (0-2) struggled with his command and took the loss. Brackman allowed four runs, two of them earned, on eight hits. He walked four and struck out five.
Herman Demmink led off the bottom of the first and slapped an opposite-field single to left field. Brad Chalk walked, but was erased when Taylor Harbin grounded into a double play. Demmink went to third on the play and scored the game's first run on Colvin's double to right field.
The Tigers added a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Stan Widmann reached on a one-out single up the middle and D.J. Mitchell beat out an infield single to put runners at first and second. Adrian Casanova bunted the runners to second and third. Demmink hit a grounder to shortstop, but Bates dropped the throw from Diaz for an error that allowed both runners to score.
With one down in the bottom of the fifth, Colvin singled up the middle, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Marquez Smith's two-out infield single to give Clemson a 4-0 lead.
Casanova led off the bottom of the sixth against Gib Hobson, just into the game in relief of Brackman, and drew a walk. Casanova went to second on a passed ball, then scored when Demmink's grounder went through Bates's legs for an error.
Casanova led off the bottom of the eighth with a double down the left-field line. Hobson was lifted at that point in favor of Engle, who got Demmink on a pop-up and walked Chalk. Sam Walls came in for Engle and got Harbin to ground into a force play, with Casanova retired at third base for the second out of the inning, but Colvin doubled to right-center to drive in Chalk and give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.
The Wolfpack averted the shutout in the top of the ninth, when Ramon Corona hit a one-out single up the middle and Bates sliced an opposite-field homer down the right-field line.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday against East Carolina at Doak Field at Dail Park. Game time is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC (88.1 FM) and on-line at gopack.com.
