RALEIGH, N.C. — After enjoying its second-best season at the turnstiles in program history, NC State finished among the national leaders in college baseball attendance, according to figures released this week by the NCAA.
The Wolfpack drew 36,414 fans to Doak Field at Dail Park in 2006, an average of 1,174 per game. NC State ranked 50th nationally in average attendance per game, and 45th in total attendance for the season. Those attendance figures for the Pack are the highest since 1995, the first year of lights at Doak Field. That season, NC State drew 41,846 total and an average of 1,308 per game.
As is usually the case, NC State was hurt by cold weather in February and much of March — 11 games with attendance of less than 600 — then drew well from late March until the end of the season, packing 24,019 fans into the Doak over the last 15 home dates of the season, an average of 1,601 per game. The largest single-game crowd of the season, 2,684, was on hand April 7 for NC State’s 8-6 victory over Wake Forest, and crowds in excess of 2,600 saw the Pack hand East Carolina a pair of defeats at the Doak in late March and mid-April. The Wolfpack’s three-game series vs. Miami the weekend of April 28-30 drew 5,155 to the Doak, the largest for a three-game home series in 2006.
There were early-season highlights as well, but those tended to be the exceptions due to the weather. An opening-day crowd of 1,927 on February 3 enjoyed 70-degree temperatures while watching the Wolfpack trounce Delaware State 21-3. Only a smattering of fans returned for a 17-0 NC State romp two days later, however, after a cold front dropped daytime highs into the low 40s with blustery winds. Warm temperatures greeted fans for a three-game series vs. UCLA the first weekend of March, and 5,105 attended the three-game set, the second-largest three-game total of the year.
Season tickets for 2007 are on sale now at the NC State ticket office (919-865-1510) or on-line at gopack.com. Fans are encouraged to buy their season tickets by January 15 for the upcoming season. The 2007 schedule, which features 33 home games, begins February 9 vs. William & Mary, and the Wolfpack will host three-game series vs. ACC rivals Florida State, North Carolina, Clemson, Maryland and Virginia Tech.
