RALEIGH, N.C – NC State won nine matches, its only loss a forfeit, and completed an opening-day doubleheader sweep Wednesday with a 32-6 blowout of Liberty. The Wolfpack defeated Campbell 34-13 earlier in the evening.
Redshirt-freshman Taylor Cummings jump-started the Wolfpack with a reversal and a takedown in the third period of the 125-pound bout, defeating Sean Katz 9-5. Garrett Cummings followed with a 13-3 major decision over Zach McCray with three takedowns in the third period. That gave NC State a 7-0 lead and the Wolfpack never looked back.
The Wolfpack made it 13-0 when freshman 141-pounder Darrion Caldwell picked up his second pin of the night, in 1:35 over Ryan McDonnell. Caldwell’s two pins took a combined time of 108 seconds.
Sophomore Joe Caramanica followed with an 11-7 victory over Tim Harner at 149 pounds, holding on as Harner scored with a reversal late in the second period and a takedown early in the third. Kody Hamrah, upset in his bout against Campbell’s Steve Witkorek, rebounded with a 7-0 decision over Shaun Smith to give the Wolfpack a 19-0 lead in the team scoring.
Obie Simpson and Liberty’s Chad Porter waged the closest bout of the match at 165 pounds. Simpson, who emerged with a 6-5 victory, used a second-peeriod escape and a late takedown to take a 4-2 lead into the final period. Porter made it a one-point match with an escape to start the period. Simpson made it 6-3 with a takedown, but had to hold on as Porter got a late takedown and nearly picked up back points in the closing seconds of the bout.
At 174, Cameron Reeves picked up a pair of late takedowns in the third period to blow open a close bout with Si-Young Son and take an 11-5 decision, giving the Pack a 25-0 lead in the team scoring.
John Campbell picked up Liberty’s only points of the evening when NC State forfeited the 184-pound match. Sophomore Mark Jahad, wrestling at 197 while incumbent starter Ryan Goodman finishes the season with the Wolfpack football team, picked up his second impressive win of the night with a 16-2 major decision over Rory Bosek. Jahad had a reversal, two takedowns and a near fall in the second period to turn a 2-0 match into an 11-2 match heading into the final two minutes.
