Former Wolfpack cornerback Lamont Reid, who played in 10 games with one start for the Arizona Cardinals this season, will have his high school number (31) retired on Friday night at halftime of a basketball game between Central Cabarrus and North Mecklenburg. Reid started 36 games for the Wolfpack at cornerback in his career and was voted co-MVP his senior season. A standout kick returner, Reid ranks fourth in school history with 994 kickoff return yards and is second in yards per return at 26.2. He joins former UNC player Natrone Means as the only two players from Central Cabarrus to have their jerseys retired.
"This is something you dream about happening when you're playing high school football," said Reid, who is in North Carolina for several weeks. "I think it's great for me to be able to go back and show kids that their dreams can come true as long as they work hard."
The football team is already preparing for the 2006 season with running and lifting weights. Dreaded winter workouts and mat drills will begin on February 6th and the Wolfpack is scheduled to start spring practice the week of March 13th. The spring game is scheduled for April 8.
Several former Wolfpack players are participating in postseason senior bowls. Last weekend, linebacker Oliver Hoyte played in the East-West Shrine Game, with his East squad falling 35-21. Marcus Hudson will be playing in two senior bowls, as he tallied three tackles and a tackle for loss in the Hula Bowl this past weekend. This weekend Hudson will be joined by Manny Lawson and T.J. Williams in the Senior Bowl, set to air January 28th at 3 p.m. on ESPN.
