RALEIGH, N.C. - The wrestling rivalry between NC State and North Carolina is so competitive that one dual match between the two per season just is not enough. The Wolfpack and Tar Heels meet twice each winter, and the first meeting between the two this season will take place Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel Hill's Carmichael Auditorium.
NC State (7-3 overall, 1-1 in the ACC) is coming off a 26-7 thrashing of Duke on Tuesday. The Pack rebounded from road losses to Maryland and Ohio University over the weekend by taking eight of 10 matches from the Blue Devils.
In that match against Duke, junior heavyweight Jainor Palma improved to 20-4 with his career-best seventh consecutive win. He became the first Wolfpack heavyweight to win 20 matches in a season since Billy Blunt in 1997-98. Also on Tuesday, freshman 149-pounder Joe Caramanica improved to 18-5, giving him the most wins by an NC State freshman since Tommy Davis went 20-8 in 1997-98.
The Wolfpack hopes to get a pair of key starters back for the match on Friday. Redshirt-sophomore Ryan Goodman (15-3 and ranked No. 13 by intermat) has been out with a knee injury since January 7, while Kody Hamrah (2-1 at 157 and the 2005 ACC Rookie of the Year) has been out most of the year with a variety of bumps and bruises, the most recent being an ankle injury.
Goodman and Hamrah would help to beef up a Wolfpack lineup that has been without as many as four starters at a time for several matches this season.
North Carolina (12-3, 0-0) is coming off a 3-1 showing this past weekend at the Virginia Duals. The Tar Heels will be without the services of All-America 133-pounder Evan Sola (5-1), who is out with a shoulder injury, but feature a pair of headliners in heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky (30-2 and ranked No. 13 by intermat) and 165-pounder Garrett Atkinson (11-6 and ranked No. 20 by intermat).
Following are the probable starters for Friday's match:
NC State vs. North Carolina
125: Jeremy Hartrum (13-6) vs. Bobby Shaw (18-11)
133: Garrett Cummings (7-5) vs. Jared Royer (15-10) or Dan Carleton (2-7)
141: Jalil Dozier (6-13) or Matt Spengler (0-0) vs. Vincent Ramirez (27-6) or Isaiah Briton (4-6)
157: Kody Hamrah (2-1) or Bryant Reams (10-8) vs. Brian Baglio (13-13)
165: Obie Simpson (8-6) vs. Garrett Atkinson (11-6) or Deon Barrett (12-8)
174: Rick Brownlee (10-9) vs. Alex Maciag (18-11)
184: Jeremy Colbert (12-8) vs. Justin Dobies (21-9)
197: Ryan Goodman (15-3) or Mark Jahad (1-2) vs. David Dashiell (27-8)
Hwt: Jainor Palma (20-4) vs. Spencer Nadolsky (30-2)
