FT. BENNING, Ga. - On Sunday, Sept. 25, the NC State rifle team finished first at the Army Marksmanship Unit Invitational in Ft. Benning, Ga. The Pack shot down Wofford, as well as the Citadel men and women, by tallying 2,248 team points in its first match of the season. NC State now stands at 3-0 on the season.
Sophomore Thomas Knight, who tied for the highest individual score among all competitors with 570 points, led the Pack. Juniors Matthew Gifford and Jennifer Marshall also performed well, as both netted 568 points. Redshirt sophomore Bill Reynolds shot a personal best 99/100 on his fourth string, tallying 542 points in the win. The Pack's newcomers also performed admirably in their first collegiate match. Shooting as individuals, freshman Jenna Matino registered a 507 score while Noel Keck fired an impressive 547.
One of the highlights of the day for the team was being able to receive advice from a number of world-class shooters, including Olympic silver medalist Major Michael Anti.
"It's good for our team to hear top-level shooters lecture on fundamentals and tips to improve our performance," Miller said. "Exposing them to this environment should help us ramp up our performance and reach our goals."
The NC State rifle team will return to action on Friday, Oct. 7, at the VMI Invitational in Lexington, Va. The following day, Saturday, Oct. 8, the rifle team will compete again at the SEARC #1 event in Dahlonega, Ga.
