It's a great time of year to go to the beach for a little fun and sun. But Joey Devine's next beach trip will be all business. NC State's all-time saves leader and a first round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves will begin his professional baseball career with the Carolina League's Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Although the right-hander joined his new team over the weekend, he won't be activated until the club makes the decision that he's ready to pitch. At NC State, Devine was always ready to pitch, becoming the first reliever in league history to be named All-ACC three times in his career.
Devine becomes the first No. 1 draft pick to begin his career in Myrtle Beach.
He holds Wolfpack career records for saves (36) and appearances (84). In his just concluded senior campaign, Devine posted a 5-3 mark with a 2.03 ERA. He also tallied an eye-popping total of 72 strikeouts in just 48 and 2/3 innings.
Devine was the 27th overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft earlier this month.
