RALEIGH, N.C. - For the second time in three weeks, NC State first baseman Aaron Bates has been named a third-team All-American, this time by Baseball America magazine.
Bates, who batted .425 with 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 64 RBIs, was named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball two weeks ago, just prior to the start of the NCAA regionals. Bates lived up to billing at the NCAA Lincoln Regional by hitting .500 (7-for-14) in three games and being named to the all-tournament team.
Bates, whose .425 batting average is just four points off the NC State school single-season record, just missed winning the Atlantic Coast Conference batting championship by two points when Florida State's Shane Robinson's average fell to .427 at the end of the Seminoles' Super Regional sweep at the hands of Florida.
A transfer from San Jose State, Bates was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the eighth round of last week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He led NC State in virtually every offensive category in 2005.
