CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Matt Avery and Casey Lambert combined on a two-hit shutout Friday night as Virginia defeated NC State 2-0 in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Davenport Field. With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 21-9 overall and 5-6 in the ACC. The loss dropped the Wolfpack to 22-10 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
Avery (3-2) was masterful for eight innings, allowing a pair of singles and retiring the last 10 men he faced and 12 of the last 13. He walked two, struck out seven and hit a batter. Lambert worked the ninth inning for his eighth save of the season, tying the school record he set a year ago for most saves in a single season. Jeff Stallings (4-3) started and took the loss for NC State. Stallings, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit. He walked three and struck out just one.
Matt Street, who scored the game's first run, was the only hitter for either team with two hits. Aaron Bates and Jake Muyco each had hits for NC State. Muyco's single extended hit hitting streak to 10 games.
Early on, the story was Stallings' bid for a no-hitter. He cruised through the first four innings, allowing a pair of baserunners in the second on an error and a walk, but otherwise was untouched. The Cavaliers mounted a serious threat in the fifth, but Stallings wriggled free with the shutout and no-hitter intact. He was bailed out by wo sterling defensive plays by the Wolfpack.
Stallings began the fifth by walking Scott Headd on four pitches and Joe Florio on a full count. Mike Campagna struck out attempting to sacrifice, and Kyle Werman, who did bunt the runners to second and third, just missed beating out his bunt for a hit, but was out at first after a terrific pickup and throw by Devine at third base. Tim Henry then sent a fly ball to shallow center field that Camp caught just inches off the ground with a diving, sliding catch for the final out of the inning.
Street broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single to left in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Zimmerman's chopper to the left side of the infield moved Street to second, and Sean Doolittle's fly ball to right field moved him to third. Adam McLaurin came in to pitch for the Pack, and Brandon Guyer got the run home with a sharply hit single off the glove of Devine at third. Guyer stole second and then came around to score on Headd's double to right-center.
