CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Gib Hobson and Joey Devine combined on a seven-hit shutout Sunday, and NC State scratched together just enough offense to defeat Virginia 1-0 in the final and deciding game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Davenport Field. All three games were decided by shutouts, with the Wolfpack winning the final two games of the series.
The win lifted NC State to 24-10 overall and pulled the Pack to within a game of the break-even mark in conference play at 7-8. Virginia fell to 21-11 overall and 5-8 in the ACC.
NC State won back-to-back shutouts for the first time since last May 15, when the Pack shut out Texas in both ends of a doubleheader. Virginia was shut out in conosecutive games for the first time since 1999.
Hobson (5-1) got the win with six innings of three-hit baseball. He walked two, one intentionally, and struck out five. He allowed more than one baserunner in an inning just once, in the sixth, his final inning of the afternoon, and he allowed just two baserunners into scoring position. Devine got his sixth save of the season with three shutout innings in relief. Devine allowed four hits and struck out five. He did not walk a batter.
Virginia starter Jeff Kamrath (5-3) struggled with his control through 5 1/3 innings, but made pitches when he had to. He allowed just one unearned run on two hits. He walked six and struck out five.
Virginia's Ryan Zimmerman, who went 3-for-3 with a double, was the game's only hitter to collect more than one hit.
The game's only run came in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of errors. Bryan Aragon led off and hit a two-hopper through first baseman Josh Darby's glove and into foul territory. Aragon, hustling all the way, legged his way into second base on the play. Ryan Pond bunted Aragon to third. The run scored when shortstop Ryan Zimmerman missed a line drive right at him off the bat of Matt Devine.
NC State returns to action on Wednesday at Doak Field with a 7 p.m. game against UNC Wilmington. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and will be available on-line on gopack.com through Yahoo's subscription service. Live in-game stats will be available through the Gametracker.
