RALEIGH, N.C. - In the first game of a home doubleheader against the Pirates of East Carolina, NC State won 1-0 on Shaina Ervin's (11-9) third shutout of the season. She fanned five batters and allowed just two base hits in the win while hitting a single in two trips to the plate. Abbie Sims hit her fifth home run of the season for the winning Wolfpack (30-17). Heather Gelbard went 1-for-3 as the Wolfpack offense collected three hits and a walk to hand Keli Harrell (20-7) the loss for ECU (41-9).
Sims gave NC State a 1-0 lead in the fourth. With one out, Sims hit a towering ball to left field that cleared the fence for her fifth home run of the season, second on the team.
Shaina Ervin was strong from the circle despite walking a season high seven batters in the win. She struck out five Pirates and allowed just two hits in her third shut out of the season. East Carolina stranded nine base runners through solid defensive play from the Wolfpack.
NC State has now won at least 30 games in both seasons in school history. The Wolfpack went 32-27 a year ago.
