RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State baseball team will return to action at Doak Field on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game vs. Elon at Doak Field. The Wolfpack, fresh off a three-game sweep of Lehigh in a non-conference series at the Doak last weekend, will look to extend its winning streak to four before returning to ACC action this weekend against Virginia Tech.
THE STARTING PITCHERS: Junior righthander Alan Letchworth (0-0, 9.39) will start for NC State against the Phoenix. This will be his sixth appearance -- his first in 17 days -- and his first start of 2005. Letchworth has allowed eight runs on 12 hits in 7 2/3 innings, but he has allowed just two runs on four hits in his last three outings, coving 4 2/3 innings. A transfer from Pitt (N.C.) Community College, Letchworth has walked four and struck out three this season.
Elon will send sophomore righthander Chris Vasami (0-0, 2.08) to the mound to face the Wolfpack. Vasami has made two relief appearances in 2005, working 4 1/3 innings, and allowing one run on four hits. He has struck out four without issuing a walk.
NC STATE VS. ELON: NC State leads the overall series with Elon, 29-6. The two teams have played every season since 1999, and the Wolfpack has won eight of nine meetings in that span, including the last six games in a row. A year ago, the Pack swept a three-game series from the Phoenix, sandwiching 5-3 nail-biters around a 16-2 blowout in the middle game of the series. David Hicks had a huge series for the Wolfpack, collecting six hits, including three homers, in nine at-bats and driving in five runs. Jason St. Julien went 5-for-13 (.385) with three doubles, a home run and six RBIs. Matt Camp went 5-for-12, scored a run and drove in three. In five games in his career against Elon, Camp has a .381 average with three runs scored and four RBIs. On the mound, Joey Devine had a pair of saves in as many attempts. Drew Davis (5-for-11) and Evan Tartaglia (4-for-9) led Elon offensively in the series.
SCOUTING ELON: The Phoenix jumped out of the gates quickly in 2005, winning its first six games, and 12 of its first 16. A three-game sweep at the hands of College of Charleston sent Elon on a 4-6 skid heading into action tonight's game. Drew Davis leads the Phoenix with a .337 average, and has five doubles and 16 RBIs, but Evan Erickson has swung the biggest stick for Elon, batting .305 with six doubles, three triples, five home runs and 26 RBIs. He leads the team in homers, RBIs and slugging percentage. Chris Price weighs in with a .321 average, four doubles, two triples, one home run and 13 RBIs.
