RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State banged out 21 hits, eight of them for extra bases, and Phil Davidson pitched five strong innings Friday as the Wolfpack downed Delaware State 18-3 at Doak Field. The game was the season opener for both teams.
Davidson cruised through five innings to get his first win of the season. Davidson allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. Sam Walls worked two scoreless innings in relief, and Jimmy Campbell worked the eighth and ninth for the Wolfpack. Delaware State starter Nick Bitter was touched for eight runs, all of them earned, on 11 hits in five innings of work and was charged with the loss. He walkd none and fanned three.
Matt Camp blooped a wind-aided double to left to get the Wolfpack started in the bottom of the first. Bryan Kinneberg moved Camp to third with a groundout, and Aaron Bates got the first run of the season home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
NC State erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second. Lee Mezistrano led off with a single to right, and Jake Muyco followed with a single to left. Brian Aragon drove in Mezistrano with a double to center field, and Matt Devine was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jonathan Diaz, who drove in Muyco with a sacrifice fly to center. Camp followed with his second double in as many at-bats, driving in Aragon and sending Devine to third. Kinneberg singled to left to drive in Devine and Camp, giving the Wolfpack and Davidson a 6-0 lead.
The Hornets got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth. Curtis Lovelle led off with his second double of the game, and went to third on C.J. Acker's infield single. Jared Lineweaver drove in Lovelle with a single up the middle, but Acker was cut down for the first out of the inning when he tried to advance to third base on the play. Davidson settled down and retired Kevin Hill on a groundout and then struck out Norris Gordon to end the inning.
Mike Jensen made it 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out solo homer over the wall in left-center, his first homer and the Wolfpack's first of the season. Mezistrano followed with a liner the middle that the Delaware State outfield played into a triple, and Muyco drove in Mezistrano with a double to the wall in left-center, giving the Pack an 8-1 lead.
The Wolfpack blew the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. Devine and Diaz led off with singles, and Matt Camp drove in Devine with a single to left, leaving runners at first and third. Kinneberg hit a grounder to first, but Lovelle's throw to second base was in the dirt for an error, scoring Diaz and opening the floodgates. Bates doubled to right to drive in Camp, and with one down, Mezistrano hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Kinneberg and make it 12-1. Muyco singled to center to drive in Bates, and Aragon hit a two-run homer to right to make it 15-1. Devine singled to left, and pinch-runner Ramon Corona stole second and scored on Diaz's double to right-center, giving the Wolfpack a 16-1 lead.
Kinneberg led off the bottom of the seventh and walked. With one down, Matt Mangini and Jason St. Julien drew pinch-hit walks to load the bases. Ryan Pond grounded into a force play to drive in Kinneberg and give NC State a 17-1 lead.
Delaware State added a run in the top of the eighth. Norris Gordon led off with a single. Pinch-runner Jesse Tyler went to second on a balk, took third on a ground ball, and scored on a balk.
The Wolfpack answered in the bottom of the eighth when Corona led off with a single to right, took second on an errant pickoff attempt, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Diaz to make the score 18-2.
NC State and Delaware State will play the second game of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Live in-game stats should be available through the Gametracker on the internet at gopack.com.
