RALEIGH, N.C. - Jake Muyco and Aaron Bates drove in three runs apiece, and Gib Hobson pitched into the sixth inning Saturday as NC State defeated San Diego State 8-5 in the second game of a three-game series at Doak Field. The Wolfpack, which has won the first two games of the series, improved to 6-1 on the season. The Aztecs dropped to 2-7.
NC State starter Gib Hobson (2-0) pitched 5 2/3 strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Freshman righthander Travis High, making his first college appearance, worked two innings to earn his first save. High did not allow a hit, and the only baserunner he allowed came on a strikeout and a wild pitch. He fanned two. Alex Hinshaw (0-2) started and took the loss for San Diego State. He worked 4 1/3 innings and was touched up for seven runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Bates had his second big game of the series, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Muyco, hitting in the second spot in the lineup, was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Bryan Kinneberg and Ryan Johnson also drove in runs for the Wolfpack. Jordan Swaydan went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs for San Diego State.
NC State jumped on Hinshaw for three runs in the first inning. Matt Camp led off and walked. Muyco followed with a double deep into the left-center-field gap, scoring Camp all the way from first base. Bates singled off the shortstop's glove and went to second on the center fielder's throw to third base. With one away, Kinneberg drove in Muyco with a grounder to second base, and Johnson's single to left drove in Bates to make it 3-0 Wolfpack.
Swaydan got one run back for the Aztecs with a one-out solo homer to left in the top of the third inning. Tim O'Brien stroked a one-out double to left in the top of the fourth and came around to score on Brock Ungricht's RBI-single to center field, cutting the NC State lead to 3-2.
The Wolfpack erupted for another big inning in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Devine got things started with a one-out single to right, and Jonathan Diaz beat out an infield hit to put runners on first and second. Muyco singled to left to score Devine, and Bates lofted a three-run homer over the big wall in left field, giving the Wolfpack a 7-2 lead. The homer was Bates' second of the series. Camp led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to left-center, and Muyco made it 8-2 with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
San Diego State opened the seventh inning with a double to right from Garrick Evans, and back-to-back singles to shallow left-center by Clayton Carson and Swaydan, the latter driving in Evans with the Aztecs' third run. James Guerrero walked to load the bases. Quintin Berry grounded to first for the first out of the inning, but Carson scored on the play, and Zawadzki grounded to second to drive in Swaydan, slicing the Wolfpack's lead to 8-5.
