Wolfpack Softball Travels to Florida Atlantic Classic

FAU Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. This Weekend
Facing arguably its toughest challenge of the young season, NC State will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the FAU Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic. NC State will open the tournament against No. 8 Michigan, and will play Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Rutgers, as well. NC State defeated Pittsburgh 5-4 last season behing the pitching of Abbie Sims and lost a close 2-0 ball game to Ohio State. It will be the first meeting for NC State against Rutgers and Michigan.
NC State Falls to 10-4 After UNCW Doubleheader
UNC-Wilmington's Hayley House hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning, as UNCW completed a doubleheader sweep of NC State with a 2-1 win. Shaina Ervin (3-3) pitched 10 solid innings in the loss, scattering nine hits and striking out seven. Miranda Ervin posted a 2-for-3 day at the plate, including an RBI double to plate the only run of the game. In the first game, NC State fell 4-3, despite Abbie Sims holding the Seahawks to no earned runs. She allowed five hits and struckout seven, including three of the first six batters she faced. Jen Chamberlin hit her third home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning to give NC State a 1-0 lead.
Sims Nabs Player of the Week Honors
For the second time in her career, Abbie Sims has been named the ACC Player of the Week. She won the honor last season on Apr. 5, and repeated it on Feb. 14 after leading NC State to a 10-2 record. She pitched her first career no-hitter, and was one walk away from a perfect game, agaisnt JMU on Feb. 13, and is 4-0 on the season with a 0.25 ERA. She has allowed opponents to hit just .086 on eight hits in 28 innings of work. Sims has 44 strikeouts to nine walks and has three shutouts. At the plate, Sims is one of the best hitters in the Pack lineup and is hitting .407 in 11 games, second on the team. Her 11 hits and nine RBIs are third on the team, and she is second in doubles (3) and home runs (1).
Chamberlin Boasts Big Inning With Big Bat
Jen Chamberlin had the most productive inning in NC State's brief softball history in a nine run inning, a school record, against Howard on Feb. 12. Chamberlin lead off the inning with a single, and would later score. When the Wolfpack batted around in the inning, she doubled in two runs before stealing third. She would score from third to complete her amazing stat line from that inning: 2-for-2, a single and a double, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
Freshmen Pitchers Dalthorp And Isley Impress
Megan Dalthorp pitched a five inning no-hitter for her first career win and Brooke Isley improved to 2-0 after her first career shutout at the Triangle Classic. Combined, the freshmen duo pitched 10 innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out 12.
Gelbard Goes For 5-for-5 With Grand Slam
Sophomore designated player and third baseman Heather Gelbard had a game to remember on Feb. 13, going 5-for-5 against Mississippi Valley State with five RBIs and three runs scored, including a tie-breaking grand slam, the first slam in school history.
Wolfpack Picked Fifth in the ACC in 2005
Head coach Lisa Navas' Wolfpack squad was picked to finish fifth in the ACC by a vote of the seven coaches. NC State garnered 18 league votes, trailing unanimous No. 1 Florida State (49), Georgia Tech (40), North Carolina (35) and Virginia (23). Maryland was sixth with 16 votes, while league newcomer Virginia Tech was seventh. NC State finished fifth in the ACC in 2004, posting a 3-7 league mark and a 32-27 record overall.
