RALEIGH, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling season hits the homestretch this week for NC State. The Wolfpack travels to Chapel Hill on Thursday to take on arch-rival North Carolina at 7:30 p.m., then turns around and hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m. in what could be a battle of the conference's two remaining unbeaten teams vs. conference competition.
The Wolfpack (7-6 overall, 3-0 ACC) defeated North Carolina 21-17 on January 28 at Reynolds Coliseum, and will carry a two-match winning streak into Thursday's rematch. The Tar Heels are 5-9 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Eleventh-ranked 133-pounder Evan Sola, a 2004 All-American, leads the Heels with a 27-3 record.
The Hokies come to Raleigh at 15-4 overall, 4-0 in the ACC, and have won six in a row and seven of eight. David Hoffman is No. 13 at 133, and Mike Faust is 27-5 and ranked 18th in the heavyweight division.
For the Wolfpack, no one is hotter than freshman 157-pounder Kody Hamrah, who is 12-9 overall and has won three in a row and five of his last six matches. Hamrah's only loss to an ACC opponent was to Virginia Tech's Reed Carpenter in the Navy Classic. Senior 149-pounder Alex Hernandez is 11-6 and has six of his last seven bouts, and junior 174-pounder Kevin Gabrielson is 14-8 and has won five of seven.
