RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday, Feb. 12, the NC State rifle squad collected two wins over the Virginia Military Institute and Penn State at the Collegiate Sectional. In addition to collecting the two wins, two squad members reached new personal best scores in the NCAA qualifying match. Based upon its efforts, the team collected first-place smallbore and first-place air rifle NRA Sectional team awards.
Despite performing lower than the usual team average, NC State still managed to collect first-place in the smallbore competition. Sophomore Matthew Gifford led the Pack with a 578 score, finishing first among all competitors. Gifford's total was also high enough to eclipse his previous personal best in smallbore action. Redshirt freshman Bill Reynolds finished second among all competitors with a strong 564 score, although his total was not applied to the team score.
Even though NC State was a bit off in its smallbore performance, the team gave an extremely strong showing during the air rifle event, falling only two points shy of the team's season high. Sophomore Jennifer Marshall paced NC State with a first-place 578 score, while redshirt junior Ryan Dorety and freshman Tom Knight finished second and third respectively with scores of 574 and 568. Dorety's 574 score surpasses her previous personal best in air rifle competition.
This weekend the rifle team will be back in action, hosting the Triangle Shoot Out on Saturday, Feb. 19. Only the third home meet for the red and white this season, the match will take place at the Wake County Range in Holly Springs, N.C. For directions to the Wake Country Range click here.
