It took two wrestlers ranked in the top six nationally to finally bring an end to NC State 197-pounder Ryan Goodman's run through the Cliff Kean Las Vegas Inviational. Even then, Goodman lost by the slimmest of margins -- two points and one point -- in finishing fifth at 197 pounds and leading the Wolfpack to a 25th-place team finish in one of its best showings ever at the Vegas Tournament, generally regarded as a stern early-season test.
"This is about the best showing we've had as a team since I've been back with the program," said Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan, who joined the coaching staff in 1997-98. "It took some outstanding performances to beat us. We had several kids wrestle deep into the brackets, and if you look back through the brackets, almost every guy that beat wound up placing in that bracket. All in all, I'm very encouraged."
Goodman's showing was espccially impressive. The redshirt-freshman transfer from Nebraska wound up wrestling five ranked opponents in a span of about 30 hours, beat three of them, and lost to the other two by two points and one point.
"He's really good," Jordan said of Goodman. "You're really not sure just how good a guy is until you see him out on the mat against other top kids. We were all pretty certain that he was one of the top guys in the country, and he proved that this weekend. The two guys that beat him placed first and third. He wasn't that far from winning the whole thing."
The Wolfpack now will take two weeks off for exam break before heading to the Great Plains for dual matches December 16 at North Dakota State and December 17 at South Dakota State.
