GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ryan Goodman and Jainor Palma breezed through the first day's action undefeated Thursday to lead a group of five NC State wrestlers who survived the first day at the Southern Scuffle at the Greensboro Coliseum's Special Events Center.
Goodman, ranked No. 16 nationally at 197 pounds in the latest rankings by The Wrestling Mall, received a first-round bye and had to wait nearly five hours before his first match, and promptly pinned North Carolina's Dennis Drury in 68 seconds in a rematch of two high school rivals from New Jersey. Goodman then advanced to Friday's quarterfinals with a 10-2 major decision over Adrian Ramadani of Kent State. Goodman improved to 12-2 on the season with the two victories.
Palma, in his third season as NC State's starting heavyweight, began his day with a pin of Willie Leonard of Kent State at the 2:41 mark, then won a pair of decisions, 7-3 over Brandon Schweitzer of Gardner-Webb and 6-2 over Bryan Reiss of Maryland. Palma also is 12-2 this season.
Three other Wolfpack wrestlers also survived the first day at the Scuffle, albeit in the wrestlebacks. Redshirt-junior 125-pounder Garrett Cummings (5-2) and freshman 149-pounder Joe Caramanica (13-2) won three of four bouts apiece on Thursday, while sophomore 184-pounder Jeremy Colbert (8-5) won twice in three matches.
