BROOKINGS, S.D. - Jeremy Hartrum and Jeremy Colbert recorded pins, and Joe Caramanica had a technical fall Saturday night as NC State walloped South Dakota State 36-6 in college wrestling. The Wolfpack improved to 4-0 with the victory. The match was the first dual match of the season for the Jackrabbits.
Hartrum got the match off to a quick start for NC State by pinning Alan Marvin at the 3:35 mark in the 125-pound bout, and Jeff Breese made the team score 10-0 with a 12-3 major decision over Derek Pirner at 133.
South Dakota State got on the scoreboard when Dusty Kavitz decisioned Jalil Dozier 5-4 at 141 pounds, but Caramanica got those points back and more with a technical fall over Brad Gregory in the 149 match. Caramanica got a takedown and six near falls in the first period, winning 15-0 and getting the tech fall with 18 seconds remaining in the first period.
Kody Hamrah kept the Wolfpack on a roll with a 13-8 decision over Andy Everson at 157 pounds, lifting the Pack to an 18-3 lead in the team scoring. Nate Althoff, South Dakota State's best and most experienced wrestler, temporarily halted NC State's momentum with a 3-2 decision over true freshman Obie Simpson, but Rick Brownlee won a 6-2 decision over Travis Gottschalk at 174 to make it 21-6 with three matches remaining.
Colbert put the match away by pinning Levi Krehmeyer at the 3:58 mark in the 184-pound match. South Dakota State forfeited the 197 match to the Wolfpack's Ryan Goodman, and heavyweight Jainor Palma completed the rout with a 3-0 decision over Jason Stripling.
NC State notes: With the win over South Dakota State, the Wolfpack is now 4-0 in dual matches for the first time since the 2001-02 season and for just the second time in 11 years ... NC State had just six wrestlers win 10 bouts all of last season, yet Hartrum, Caramanica and Goodman each picked up their 10th victories of the season in the rout of the Jackrabbits, and Palma (9-2), Brownlee (8-4) and Breese (7-3) are all within hailing distance of 10 wins ... NC State will now take a week off for the Christmas break before regrouping for the Southern Scuffle, which will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum on December 29-30.
