RALEIGH, N.C. - Recruiting coast to coast, NC State baseball coach Elliott Avent and his staff signed a seven-man recruiting class during the November signing period. Avent signed players from four states and both coasts, including three pitchers and a pair of catchers.
In-state, the Wolfpack signed Millbrook righthander Sam Brown, an all-state selection as a junior this past spring; outfielder Wade Moore of West Rowan, a superb athlete who also is one of the top running backs in the state; catcher Nathan Cockman of Northeast Guilford, the top returning power hitter in North Carolina; and versatile infielder Dallas Poulk of Pine Forest.
NC State made a splash nationally by signing lefthander Jimmy Gilheeney of Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, Rhode Island, ranked as one of the top 100 players in the country heading into the 2006 season. The Pack also snared righthander Cheyne Hahn of San Jose City College and catcher David Lindsay of Hermitage High School in Richmond, Va.
"After signing a much larger class last year, we felt that our needs were more general this year," Avent said. "We always look to sign pitchers, and the three we signed - Sam Brown, Jimmy Gilheeney and Cheyne Hahn - have had outstanding success at the high school or junior college level.
"All of our catchers are juniors and draft eligible, so we felt like we had to bring in at least one catcher, and we got two. David Lindsay is a very good defensive catcher from one of the top programs in Virginia. He has caught some big-time pitching prospects. Nate Cockman is probably better-known for his offense -- he has terrific power -- but he is capable behind the plate as well.
"Wade Moore was one of our top recruiting targets. He is an outstanding athlete. He can hit for average, has some gap power, runs well, and is a very hard-nosed player. Dallas Poulk can play a lot of positions, is a capable hitter, and has some speed. He plays the game with great passion and energy, which has been a trademark of NC State baseball over the years."
