Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox approached former NC State closer Joey Devine in the clubhouse at Turner Field at about 11 this morning, pulled Devine aside and informed the young reliever that he had made the Braves' roster for their National League Division Series with Houston.
Devine, the Braves' first-round draft pick this past June, was 0-1 with a 12.60 ERA, but those stats are skewed by two appearances in August when Devine was suffering from a strained hip flexor. In three appearances the last week of the regular season, Devine allowed no runs and only one hit in three innings. He walked one and struck out three in those three appearances.
Devine went 5-3 with 12 saves and a 2.03 ERA for NC State in 2005. He finished his career as the Wolfpack's career leader with 36 saves and 87 appearances. He is one of three pitchers in Atlantic Coast Conference history to record 10 or more saves in three different seasons.
Devine signed with the Braves the day after he was drafted and made it to Atlanta less than nine weeks later. After two disastrous starts, he revealed soreness in his right hip, which was diagnosed as a strain of the hip flexor. Rehabilitation helped to heal the injury and Devine rejoined the Braves for the final week of the regular season.
