RALEIGH, N.C. - Wolfpack reliever Joey Devine, an All-America selection as a freshman two years ago and a two-time first-team All-ACC selection, picked up his latest honor this week when Baseball America tabbed the junior righthander as a preseason third-team All-American.
Devine, one of eight Atlantic Coast Conference players named to the Baseball America All-America teams, is NC State's career saves leader with 24 in just two seasons with the Wolfpack. He set an ACC freshman record with 14 saves as a freshman in 2003, one shy of tying the NC State single-season mark of 15, set by Jamie Wolkosky in 1992. He added 10 more saves a year ago, and is the only reliever in Wolfpack history and one of just five pitchers in ACC history to record double-digit saves totals in more than one season. With 10 or more saves in 2005, Devine will become only the third ACC pitcher ever to record three seasons with 10 or more saves.
This past summer, Devine played for Team USA and had a sensational summer campaign, helping the USA to the gold medal in the FISU World University Championships in Taipei. In 10 appearances with Team USA, Devine went 1-0 with a 0.55 ERA. He allowed just one run on nine hits in 16 1/3 innings. He walked eight and struck out 26.
In his two seasons at NC State, Devine is 6-7 with a 3.28 ERA. He has appeared in 59 games, including a school-record 36 appearances in 2003. He has pitched 101 2/3 innings and allowed 41 runs, 37 earned, on 80 hits. He has walked 34 and struck out 134.
Baseball America's All-America teams are chosen by the magazine's editorial staff in conjunction with Major League Baseball scouting directors.
