RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday, Jan. 22, the NC State rifle team resumed action in Spartanburg, S.C., alongside stiff competition in the South Eastern Air Rifle conference (SEARC). Once all 44 participants had fired, NC State came out on top in both SEARC and NCAA scores. Serving as the first match of the spring for the Wolfpack, the win helped catapult NC State back into the national rankings at No. 17 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll. Birmingham Southern placed second, while the Citadel drew third-place. Clemson, the only other competing ACC squad, finished fourth.
Continuing a trend of dominating performances which began during her freshman season, sophomore Jennifer Marshall led the competing field in overall score. While Marshall's score set her at the top of the list, two other members of the team posted top-10 finishes. Freshman Tom Knight placed seventh with a 564 score, besting sophomore teammate Matthew Gifford by one point. Gifford, who placed eighth overall, shot a 563 total. Although redshirt-freshman Bill Reynolds score did not count towards the team total, his 556 total stands as a new personal best.
This weekend the rifle team will be back in action, hosting Virginia Military Institute and the Citadel on Saturday, Jan. 29. Only the second home meet for the red and white this season, the match will take place at the Wake County Range in Holly Springs, N.C. For directions to the Wake Country Range click here.
