Women's Tennis Completes Weekend at St. Mary's Classic

Raleigh, N.C. - Elin Stahl Johansson finished second in her flight as the women's tennis team took to the court for only the second time this fall at the St. Mary's Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. Over the course of three days, the Wolfpack displayed charisma and toughness as they battled opponents from seven other schools.
"We are really proud of the fight that our players put up this weekend," stated head coach Hans Olsen. "Our newcomers are continuing to shine and our veteran players are showing improvement and heart. This team continues to look better and better every time they compete."
Barbara Orlay, ranked No. 69 in the preseason ITA rankings, finished sixth in flight one after dropping her first match to Tennessee's Sabita Maharaj in round one. She followed with a three set win over Emily DeCamilla of Ohio State, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Hala Sufi of Purdue.
In flight two, Kristin Lam got to work early with a two set win over Purdue's Alyssa Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-2. Lam then dropped two sets to Victoria Jones of Tennessee. In the same flight, Nandita Chandrasekar collected a win over Purdue's Shannon Moore, 6-4, 7-5. After losing in two sets to Bryce Marable of Tennessee, Chandrasekar and Lam were then paired to face off in a battle to determine third and fourth place. The all Pack match ended with Lam besting Chandrasekar, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
In flight three, Wake Forest's Katie Martzolf defeated Virginia Romero, 6-0, 6-4. Romero would then go on to beat Emily Vest of Middle Tennessee, 6-3, 6-3. Romero placed sixth in the flight following a loss to Purdue's Amy Walgenbach, 6-4, 6-4.
Agustina Arechavaleta opened flight four with a loss to Melissa Schaub of Tennessee and stepped up to collect a victory from Ohio State's Kristin Messmer, 6-4, 6-4. After falling to Purdue's Shawna Zuccarini, Danielle Stadelmann came back to beat Silvia Prajescu from Ohio State, 6-5, 6-4. Arechavaleta and Stadelmann then squared off for the second Wolfpack battle, with Arechavaleta earning fifth place with a win, 6-4, 6-4.
In the fifth singles flight, newcomer Julia Roach continued to impress, opening with a win over Blakely Offutt from Wake Forest, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Following a defeat at the hands of Brooke Beier of Purdue, Roach earned a third place finish after coming from behind to win over Meredith Vincent of Ohio State, 4-6, 6-3, (10-5).
Roach wasn't the only NC State newcomer to make a name for herself at the tournament. Elin Stahl Johansson started flight six with a victory of Purdue's Brittany Minna, 6-3, 6-1. Stahl Johansson then earned a spot in the flight's championship with a second win over Ohio State's Sonia Ruzimovsky, 6-3, 7-5. Stahl Johansson would end singles competition with a second place finish after losing to Liis Sober of Kentucky, 6-1, 6-2. Her finish served as the Wolfpack's best singles finish in the tournament. Sober, before beating Stahl Johannson in the championship round, had begun flight six play with a win over Carmen Torres. Torres would go on to finish in fifth place after wins over Claudia Szabo of Middle Tennessee State and Stahl Johansson'soriginal opponent, Brittany Minna.
In the seventh and final singles flight, Lauren Barry fell to Sabrina Rohrmoser of Middle Tennessee State after receiving a bye in the first round. Barry would eventually finish in fourth place after falling again to Lisa Bornt-Davis of Furman, who had defeated her twin sister, Allison Barry, in the opening round of the flight. At the same time, Kentucky's Caroline Winebrenner defeated Taylor Parker, setting up another match between Pack teammates. Allison Barry would overcome Parker and finish in sixth place after falling again to Emily Howard of Ohio State, 7-6, 1-6, 6-2. Parker finished seventh in the flight.
In doubles action, Stahl Johansson and Stadelmann found success in the second flight. After losing to teams from Purdue and Furman, the group finished in seventh with a win over the Middle Tennessee State pair of Cibils/Williams, 8-6.
In the third and final doubles flight, the Barry twins finished in eighth place.
Coach Olsen and the women's tennis team will spend the remainder of the month preparing to host the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational. The three-day tournament will take place Oct. 15-17 at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Complex and will feature student-athletes from over 15 different colleges.
