RALEIGH, N.C. - When NC State baseball coach Elliott Avent hired Josh Holliday as the Wolfpack's volunteer coach a year ago, he didn't figure that Holliday would be in Raleigh for long. And he was right. In late July, Georgia Tech hired Holliday to be the Yellow Jackets' hitting coach and catching instructor. "I hate to lose a coach with Josh's ability, but this was an opportunity that was simply too great for him to pass up," Avent said. An All-American and an Academic All-American at Oklahoma State, Holliday capped his college playing career as a senior in 1999 by batting .290 with 15 homers and 65 RBIs and leading the Cowboys to the College World Series. He was named Oklahoma State's male student-athlete of the year. The Toronto Blue Jays drafted Holliday in the ninth round of the '99 draft, and he played professionally for two seasons before retiring and joining his father -- Tom Holliday, the OSU head coach -- on the Cowboys coaching staff. He became a full-time member of the staff in 2001. The Daily Oklahoman named Holliday a member of the Oklahoma State University All-Century Team, and in 2003 he was elected to the Oklahoma State University Baseball Hall of Fame.
