CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Four Miami players had at least three hits and four RBIs, and Michael Rogers had the worst start of his college career as the Hurricanes trounced NC State 19-5 Saturday in Game 4 of the 2004 NCAA Coral Gables Regional. The loss dropped the Wolfpack into an elimination game against Florida Atlantic, which was to begin 50 minutes following the loss to the Canes.
Miami gave NC State its worst loss since a 19-1 loss to the Hurricanes at Doak Field in April 2000, despite a four-run first inning for the Pack against Miami All-American Cesar Carrillo. Matt Camp led off the game with a single to center, and Jason St. Julien followed with a roller through the right side of the infield to put runners on first and second. David Hicks hit a single to left to drive in Camp with the first run of the game, and Mike Jensen hit a towering home run to left, a three-run blast to make it 4-0 before Rogers even took the mound.
The 4-0 lead lasted until the bottom of the second. Jim Burt, Erick San Pedro and Gaby Sanchez got the inning started with back-to-back-to-back doubles, which made it 4-2. Richard Gianotti popped out trying to bunt, but Roger Tomas singled to left to put runners on the corners, and Jon Jay homered to left-center to give Miami a 5-4 lead.
Brian Barton led off the bottom of the third inning and walked, breaking a string of 99 consecutive batters faced by Rogers without a walk. Rogers hit Burt with his next pitch, and San Pedro beat out a bunt for a single, loading the bases. Sanchez dropped a blooper into no-man's land in shallow right field, driving in two runs. Sanchez got caught too far off first base after rounding the bag, and in the ensuing mayhem, San Pedro was out at third base, with Sanchez taking second on the throw. Gianotti and Tomas walked to load the bases, but Jay grounded into a double play to end the inning with the Hurricanes holding a 7-4 lead. The three-walk inning tied Rogers' season-high for walks in a game. He had walked just four batters in his previous six starters, and five in his previous seven total appearances.
Dustin Knight got one run back by himself with a leadoff homer to left-center in the top of the fourth, pulling NC State to within two runs at 7-5, but the Canes put Rogers out of the game in the bottom of the inning. Ricks led off with a single to left-center, and with one down, Barton and Burt singled to left to drive in a run and make it 8-5. After San Pedro popped out for the second out, Sanchez hit a homer down the left-field line, making it 11-5. That was it for Rogers, who was tagged for a career-high 11 runs on 12 hits in just 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Nate Cretarolo came in, walked Giannotti and then struck out Tomas to end the inning.
Cretarolo walked Jay, Ricks and Braun to start the bottom of the fifth, and Gib Hobson came in to relieve. Barton drove in Jay with a sacrifice fly to right, and Burt cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left, making it 15-5. The Canes made it a complete rout in the bottom of the sixth. Gianotti led off, walked, stole second, and took third on a groundout. Jay singled to drive in Giannotti, and Ricks singled to left to put runners on first and third. Braun grounded into a force play, with Ricks out at second. Barton doubled to drive in Jay and Braun, and Burt singled to center to drive in Barton, giving the Hurricanes a 19-5 lead.
