NC State right-hander Michael Rogers is officially a member of the Oakland A's organization. A second round selection in this month's baseball draft, Rogers inked a deal with the A's over the weekend. Terms of the contract were not announced. As a redshirt sophomore this past season, the Hamilton, New Jersey native established himself as one of the top pitchers in the ACC, going 9-4 with a 3.08 ERA.
Using a fastball that's been clocked above 90 mph and a sharp-breaking curve, Rogers struck out 110 batters, while walking only 21 in 117 innings pitched in 2004. He was also named ACC Pitcher of the Week a school-record five times.
The highlight of Rogers' career occurred on May 15th when he tossed a complete game shutout in NC State's stunning 2-0 victory over then No. 1 ranked Texas in Austin. In going the distance, the righty allowed only three hits, striking out 10 and issuing only one walk.
