Briana Vega Hosts Live Chat On GoPack.com
As a part of GoPack.com's coverage of the 2004 NCAA Women's golf regionals Briana Vega hosted a live chat on Wednesday, May 5, 2004. The senior from North Andover, Mass., leads the team with a 77.2 stroke average and is a two-time team MVP. She has helped the Wolfpack reach the NCAA regionals for the third consecutive year in only the fourth year of the program's reemergence after a 14-year hiatus. Vega has led the team in four tournaments this year, with her best finish coming at the Cougar Fall Classic in Charleston this past September, where she took sixth place with a five-over-par score. A psychology major, Vega will finish up coursework in the fall and will graduate in December.

Senior Briana Vega: Hi everyone. We had a great day on the course, great weather and we're excited about starting tomorrow. Thanks for submitting questions and for logging on this evening. I'll start answering them now. |
Brian (Raleigh): How do you keep up with your schoolwork, being on the road as much as the golf team is? |
Senior Briana Vega: It's a really difficult task and you need a lot of time management skills. But it is something that you get better with over the course of your college career. It's also difficult because we travel both seasons, unlike some other sports that might only compete during one semester. I'll hitting the books here shortly as soon as we're finished! |
Betsy (Cary): What advice do you have for young girls interested in playing golf? |
Senior Briana Vega: Get involved in junior tournaments and at your high school. Practice, practice, practice and most importantly have fun! |
REBEKAH, DOVER: how do you balance the life of being a student athlete, i dont think i could ever do it, do you ever get free time to relax and have fun |
Senior Briana Vega: It kinda goes back to the time management thing, but we do have a good time off the course and when we're not traveling. |
Tony (Detriot): Being from the North, how is playing golf in the south, and being surrounded by rednecks? |
Senior Briana Vega: I'm laughing out loud right now. It's a different style of life and the golf courses are different down here, however I really enjoy the hospitality. |
Steve (Raleigh): Do you think your lack of distance will play a factor this week and how do you think you will manage the bermuda greens, no having played on them all year? |
Senior Briana Vega: I actually play at a competitive distance, thank you. I'm not the longest, but I'm definitely not the shortest. The length of the golf course will not be an issue this week. It's actually playing shorter than we're used to. |
John (jupiter): when do you guys start play? |
Senior Briana Vega: 12:30 tomorrow. You can check us out on golfstat.com where there is live scoring |
Sam (Howey in the Hills): Many people question your team's bid to regionals, considering a couple last place finishes in tournaments this year. What do you think about this? |
Senior Briana Vega: Regionals are just like the NCAA basketball tournament, where the teams playing best at the end of the season (like we have in the last few weeks) have the best chances of doing well in the tournament and moving on to the NCAA's. What is important is not how we've done in the past, but how we play in the next three days. So we have an excellent chance. Also our bid to regionals was earned ... it wasn't given to us. |
Christy (Denver): What are your plans after school? |
Senior Briana Vega: I'm going to graduate in Dec., but in Nov., I'm going to try to qualify for the Future's Tour or the LPGA. |
Scott (Charlotte): How often do you watch Caddyshack? Do you even like golf movies? |
Senior Briana Vega: I love Caddyshack and my Dad and I often quote from the movie and I actually got a chance to meet Bill Murray when I was playing at the US Am at Sleepy Hollow CC |
Jordan (Goldsboro): Who's the most famous person you've ever played golf with? |
Senior Briana Vega: I got to play with Jim Rice from the Red Sox this past summer |
Justin - raleigh: You seeing anyone? :) |
Senior Briana Vega: Yes Justin, I am seeing the goalie on our soccer team. |
Mark (Chapel Hill): What is your favorite golf course to play? |
Senior Briana Vega: my favorite golf course is Pinehurst #8 and any Donald Ross course |
Morgan (Holly Springs): Have you ever had a hole-in-one? |
Senior Briana Vega: I have not had a hole-in-one ... or even seen one! |
Brad (Encinitas): Of the ACC schools in the East regional, who was the toughest competition for the Wolfpack during the season? |
Senior Briana Vega: All of them are really. Duke is the best team in the nation and our league is really competitive. |
Wendi, Chicago: What has been your most memorable moment in golf? |
Senior Briana Vega: It would have to be the last round at ACC's because it was my best college round and my family was there to see it. |
Jane (St. Louis): Congratualtions on the team's third, and your second consecutive trip to the NCAA Regional Championships!
Looking at the field, which is always tough when ladden with ACC schools, what type of team score do you think it will take to qualify for the finals in Auburn?
Good Luck! |
Senior Briana Vega: I think breaking 300 everyday will put us in a good position to go to nationals |
Richie (Madison, WI: How do yall shoot so high on such short courses. |
Senior Briana Vega: The yardage we play is comparable to an average men's course and a lot of the time we are not playing in great weather conditions. |
Brad (Nashville): Do girls talk trash on the golf course? I know that their is golf course etiquete, but you're paired up with your opponents right? |
Senior Briana Vega: Yes we are paired with our opponents and sometimes we're good friends with the people we're playing with. So with our friends we do a little friendly trash talking, but it's all in fun. |
Mike (Winston-Salem): Do you enjoy playing the video game Golden Tee? |
Senior Briana Vega: I actually haven't played it, but I have played Tiger Woods' golf and I'm terrible at it. |
Debbie (Lake Norman NC): What do you do about your golfers tan? I know I have one from working in the yard all day, do you have a secret to even out my skin? |
Senior Briana Vega: That's a pretty hard thing to rid of, Debbie, my suggestion is to start using self bronzers. |
Ryan (Charlotte): Seems your stroke average is up a little from last season. What's the difference? Are the courses you played this season tougher than last? |
Senior Briana Vega: Thanks for noticing Ryan! We are playing a tough schedule, but not to blame that. My putting was giving me some issues earlier this season. |
John (Carlsbad, Ca.): What's your favorite club in your bag? Do you have a favorite speciality shot? Who's the joker on the team? |
Senior Briana Vega: My favorite club is my 8 iron. I enjoy hitting bunker shots. The joker on the team would have to be Colby ... she's always making us laugh. |
Neal&Bob (cary): how many players scores count in college golf? |
Senior Briana Vega: We play five and count four |
Laura (Atlanta): Will you guys be off the course in time to watch Friends tomorrow night? |
Senior Briana Vega: We'll be back in time, but we'll have to be in bed since it's on from 9-11 and we've got early tee times the following morning. We've got friends taping it at home though! |
Lila (Phoenix): I got to see of the tournament NC State hosted here out west in February. It was a nice treat.
Which was you most favorite and least favorite to play this season? |
Senior Briana Vega: Well thanks for coming out to watch us play! My favorite that we played this season was Bryan Park because I've played there for the past three years and I don't have a least favorite. |
Senior Briana Vega: Well I've got to run guys, I'm sorry I couldn't get to all your questions. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me. Remember you can watch us live on golfstat.com and we're each doing a diary entry every night right here on GoPack.com! This was fun, sorry I type so slow, hopefully we can do this again in two weeks when we're at nationals! |
