GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State softball extended its win streak to 10 games by outscoring UNC-Greensboro 14-6 in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 7 in Greensboro, N.C. The Wolfpack (27-17) collected 26 hits, three homeruns and six doubles as the offense powered NC State to a 7-2 win in game one and a 7-4 decision in the second game. Sims improved to 17-6 on the season while Ervin won her seventh contest of the year.
In game two, Sims led off the second inning with a single to right, and Shaina Ervin followed with a single to dead center to adance Sims to third. Moffatt Steele came in to run, and promptly stole her second base in two games, her team leading seventh of the year. With runners at second and third with one out, Heather Jedrey hit an RBI single off of Oakes (#-#) to score Sims, and Heather Gelbard followed with an RBI single to score Steele for a 2-0 Wolfpack lead. Jen Chamberlin homered to deep centerfield to make the score 3-0 in the top of the third. It was Chamberlin's ninth of the season, good for second in the ACC.
The Spartans tied it in the bottom of the third on a three-run homerun from Adrian Audley, and pounded out five hits in the inning, but left the bases loaded as Shaina Ervin struckout Christina Montana to end the inning.
NC State answered with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth, getting four straight singles to start the inning and an error to score Poore, who pinch ran for Shaina Ervin, Sims and Chamberlin.
UNC-G picked up a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 6-4 heading into the sixth. After Montana bunted her way on, she attempted to advance to third on the single by Hubbard, the Spartans' leadoff hitter. Caroline Blount gunned down her second runner of the doubleheader at third, throwing a perfect strike to Chamberlin to get Hubbard for the second out of the inning.
The lead swelled to 7-4 in the top of the seventh as Shaina Ervin leadoff the inning by hitting the first pitch from Oakes over the centerfield wall.
For the game, NC State pounded out seven runs on 15 hits, hitting two homeruns and collecting a double. Ervin went 6.2 innings, striking out six and allowing 11 hits. Abbie Sims came on with runners on the corners to close the game, picking up a pair of strikeouts for her first career save.
The Wolfpack won game one behind nine strikeouts and a five hitter from Abbie Sims (18-6). Sims has now won seven straight games, with an ERA of 0.60 over that stretch, striking out 53 batters in 46.2 innings of work.
NC State scored in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead on two hits and a Miranda Ervin sacrifice fly. Gelbard led off with a single up the middle, and Sims followed with a double off of the centerfield wall, advancing Gelbard to third. Ervin followed with a fly ball to left, easily scoring Gelbard for a 1-0 lead.
The lead would move to 3-0 after Gelbard walked and was pinch ran for by Moffatt Steele. Steele stole second, her team leading sixth stolen base in six attempts on the season. After Sims popped out to second, Miranda Ervin homered to deep right centerfield with a full count from pitcher Danielle Byrne (6-7). It was Ervin's fourth of the year, second on the team.
Sims struckout the side in the first, as no Spartan hitter made contact, and didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, an RBI double from Jennifer Bonilla with no outs in the fourth to cut the Wolfpack lead to 3-1. With Bonilla on second with only one out, Spartans centerfielder Lynsi Pierce hit a sharp groundball to Jen Chamberlin. Chamberlin fired to first to get Pierce, and threw to third to get Bonilla as she tried to advance on the inning ending double play.
The Wolfpack would put two more on the board in the top of the fifth on three straight hits. Miranda Ervin doubled to left centerfield and Chamberlin followed with a single up the middle. After Beth Poore and Stacee Powell came into pinch run, Allison Cuculich hit a two RBI double to left center to score Poore and Powell and stake NC State to a 5-1 lead.
The top of the sixth saw two more runs cross the plate, as Heather Jedrey lead off the inning with a double to right center, and Heather Gelbard followed with a double to left field to score a run. Gelbard would advance to third on a wild pitch, and come home on a sacrifice fly from Sims to make the score 7-1.
UNC-G added a run in the sixth to cut the Wolfpack lead to 7-2, but Sims again struckout the side in the seventh to end the game.
