FREDERICK, Md. - Phillip Davidson allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings, and NC State used a balanced, 10-hit attack to hang an 8-3 defeat on Maryland in the second game of an Atlantic Coast Confernence doubleheader at Harry Grove Stadium. The win gave the Wolfpack a sweep of its three-game ACC series with the Terrapins this weekend, and improved the Pack to 24-10 overall and 7-5 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 16-18 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
Davidson (4-1) gave up seven hits, but three of them never left the infield, one found its way through a hole in the infield, and one was lofted into shallow right field. Davidson walked one and struck out three. Maryland starter Sean Kane (1-5) struggled, allowing five runs, two of them earned, on six hits in five innings. He walked two and fanned four.
The Wolfpack took advantage of some very sloppy Maryland defense in the top of the second to take an early 4-0 lead. With one out, Eric Taylor walked. Jonathan Diaz hit a nubber to the pitcher that Kane threw into right field for an error. Taylor scored on the play and Diaz went all the way to second on the overthrow. Ryan Johnson followed with a dribbler to first base, beat the pitcher to the bag for an infield single, and went to second when Buffone's flip to Kane went for an error. Diaz scored from second on the play to make it 2-0. Matt Camp dropped a single into shallow left field to drive in Johnson with the third run of the inning. Camp took second on the throw home, went to third on Jake Muyco's groundout, and scored on David Hicks's infield single.
Maryland cut the four-run lead in half in the bottom of the inning, thanks to several well-placed ground balls. Will Frazier reached on an infield single into the hole between shortstop and third base to start the inning. Dan Melvin's grounder up the middle found the hole and went into center field for a single. Brian Jarosinski beat out a groudner to third base to load the bases with none out. Matt Maropis grounded into a force play to drive in Frazier, and Joe Sargent singled to right to score Melvin and cut the Wolfpack lead to 4-2.
The Pack got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth. Jason St. Julien led off with a booming double over the head of Jarosinski in center field and scored on Dustin Knight's sacrifice fly to right field, increasing the lead to 5-2.
Camp led off the top of the sixth with a grounder through the legs of Sargent at third base, and was bunted to second base by Jake Muyco. Lee Mezistrano doubled to the wall in center field to drive in Camp and give NC State a 6-2 lead.
Maryland mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Anthony Buffone and Kevin Hart walked, and Jason Maxey laced a double down the right-field line and into the corner to drive in Buffone. Jonathan Diaz made a terrific decoy at the second-base bag to momentarily stop Hart, preventing him from scoring on the play. The one run cut the lead to 6-3.
Johnson led off the top of the eighth with an infield single, and Matt Camp beat out a bunt for a hit. The runners moved up to second and third on the play when pitcher Seth Overbey's throw to first was low for an error. Muyco followed with a two-run single to right field, making it 8-3, Wolfpack.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday against Campbell at Doak Field. The two teams will conclude their game of February 14, which was suspended with the Wolfpack leading 5-1 in the middle of the seventh inning. That game will resume at 6 p.m. A regularly scheduled nine-inning game will follow.
