RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State used dominant pitching and a 15-hit attack to beat Old Dominion 10-1 on Tuesday at Doak Field. A combination of five pitchers struck out 14 batters while only giving up five hits. The Wolfpack improved to 18-8 while the Monarchs dropped to 12-13 on the season.
Pack starter Daniel Caldwell (1-0) pitched three innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits. He walked two while striking out five. It was his first start since 2002 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Collin Brown entered the game in the fourth and struck out four in 1 2/3 innings before leaving the game with an injury.
NC State relievers Brandon Shipwash, Jeffrey Stallings and Jimmy Campbell combined to pitch the last 4 1/3 innings, giving up just two hits. They struck out five and walked two.
Monarchs starter Andrew Bucher (2-2) was touched up for nine hits, leading to six runs, three of which were unearned, in 3 2/3 innings. Reliever Dana Arrowood was more effective, giving up no runs on only two hits over 2 1/3 innings while striking out one.
The start of the game was delayed 90 minutes by rain before Keith Hahn got the Monarchs off to a quick start with a lead-off bunt in the top of the first. He advanced to third on a throwing error by Caldwell on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Chipman. Hahn scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Brandon Carter for ODU's only run of the game. Matt Camp got the Wolfpack out of the inning with a great diving play on a Derrick James grounder to second, stopping what would turn out to be the only serious scoring threat of the night for the Monarachs.
It didn't take long for the Pack to strike back in a big way. In the bottom of the first, Camp made it to first on an error and got to second on a Bryan Kinneberg hit to left to get the offense started. Both runners advanced on a David Hicks grounder for the first out. Camp then scored on a wild pitch by Bucher. Jason St. Julien walked, and he and Kinneberg scored on a double to left by Lee Mezistrano after Derrick James slipped and fell trying to make the defensive play.
NC State struck again in the bottom of the third. Hicks reached first on an Eric Mesa error. St. Julien advanced the runner with a hit to left and Mezistrano loaded the bases when he beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt for an infield single. After Taylor struck out, Muyco singled to left, scoring Hicks and St. Julien. A Jonathan Diaz sacrifice fly scored Mezistrano to give the Pack a 6-1 lead.
Any chance of keeping the game close ended in the bottom of the seventh when the Pack took advantage of control problems by Monarchs reliever Jason Godin. With one out, Taylor was hit by a pitch. Muyco reached on a single to right that advanced Taylor to third. Diaz was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Johnson scored Taylor, and a wild pitch scored Muyco. A single to left by Camp got Diaz in, and Kinneberg doubled to drive in Camp and give NC State an insurmountable 10-1 lead.
NC State returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 against Davidson at Doak Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
