RALEIGH, N.C. - Andrew Dobies pitched a complete-game eight-hitter, and four different Virginia players drove in two runs apiece as the Cavaliers handed NC State a 9-2 defeat in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field. The victory lifted the Cavaliers to 20-5 overall and 5-2 in the ACC. The Wolfpack fell to 15-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Virginia staked Dobies (4-0) to a four-run lead before he even took the mound, and he was in command the rest of the way. He gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but otherwise kept NC State's offense in check. He did strand a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pack had just five runners get past first base all night. Dobies walked none and struck out nine. Wolfpack starter Michael Rogers (4-1) was not his usual self. He allowed six runs, tying his season high, on eight hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out three.
The Cavaliers put four runs on the board in the top of the first, three before Rogers could record an out. Matt Street led off with a single to left, and Mark Reynolds walked. Ryan Zimmerman singled to right to drive in Street, and Joe Koshansky lined a triple into the right-center-field gap to drive in Reynolds and Zimmerman, and give Virginia a 3-0 lead. Koshansky then scored on Matt Dunn's groundout to shortstop, making it 4-0.
The Wolfpack got all off its offense in the bottom of the second. With one out, Joey Devine, making a start at third base, singled to right and scored all the way from first on Marc Maynor's double into the left-field corner. Maynor went to third on the throw to the plate, and Jake Muyco followed with a squeeze bunt to score Maynor and cut the Virginia lead to 4-2.
The Cavaliers were back at work in the top of the fourth. Josh Darby and Scott Headd led off with singles to left, and Kyle Werman beat out a sacrifice attempt for a single to load the bases with none out. Street hit a sinking line drive to left. Jason St. Julien dived for the ball, but it ticked off the end of his glove and rolled away for a two-run double that made it 6-2, Virginia.
The Cavs put the game away with three runs in the top of the seventh. Reynolds led off and doubled to right-center, and Zimmerman drove him home with an RBI single up the middle. Zimmerman went to second on a wild pitch and stole third. With two down, Darby walked, and Headd doubled to left-center to drive in both runners and givie Virginia a 9-2 lead.
The series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on the internet on gopack.com via the Yahoo subscriber service. Live in-game stats will be available on gopack.com via the Gametracker.
