RALEIGH, N.C. - David Hicks and Marc Maynor drove in two runs each, and Michael Rogers flirted with a no-hitter for the third time in six starts this season as NC State opened the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball season with an 8-1 romp over Duke at Doak Field. The Wolfpack improved to 15-4 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. Duke dropped to 10-11 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Rogers (4-0) was perfect through 5 2/3 innings, and had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 before winding up his evening with a three-hitter through eight complete. He allowed one run, walked one and struck out 10. It was the third time in six starts that Rogers has taken a no-hitter into the sixth inning this season. Duke starter Tim Layden (2-1) was tough early, but wound up being charged with eight runs, six earned, on nine hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out a career-high 10.
The Wolfpack picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Matt Camp led off and extended hit hitting streak to 15 games with a single up the middle. The Pack caught a break when Ryan Johnson struck out. Camp, caught halfway between first and second on strike three, was safe at second when second baseman Bryan Smith was unable to handle the throw from the catcher. Camp scored on Jason St. Julien's single to left, giving NC State a 1-0 lead.
Johnson bunted for a single with one down in the bottom of the third and St. Julien walked. Hicks then ripped a Layden fastball into the right-field corner for a two-run double and a 3-0 Wolfpack lead. That hit extended Hicks's hitting streak to 11 games.
Jake Muyco singled to right field with one down in the bottom of the fourth, went to second on a wild pitch, was bunted to third by Jonathan Diaz, and scored on Camp's squeeze bunt.
The Pack blew it open in the bottom of the fifth. Hicks doubled to right-center and scored on a pair of wild pitches from Layden, who uncorked four in the game. Dustin Knight doubled to right-center and Eric Taylor walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Maynor drove them both in with a triple into the right-field corner. Muyco then laid down a squeeze bunt to score Maynor and give Rogers and the Wolfpack an 8-0 lead.
Duke, which did not come close to a hit for the first six innings, finally broke up the no-hitter and the shutout in the top of the seventh. Layden singled to right with one out to break up the no-hitter, and Smith doubled down the right-field line to break up the shutout. Rogers gave up one more hit, a two-out single to Adam Murray in the eighth, before turning the ball over to reliever Jason Duncan, who worked a scoreless ninth inning.
The Wolfpack and Blue Devils will resume their three-game series with a 2 p.m. encounter on Saturday.
