RALEIGH, NC - NC State softball improved to 11-14 after shutting out Charlotte (10-8), 8-0 in the night cap of the Wednesday night double header at Walnut Creek. The Wolfpack tallied 12 hits, including a solo home run by freshman Jennifer Chamberlin - her fifth of the year - as the leadoff batter in the second inning. Freshman pitcher Abbie Sims earned her ninth victory with a two hit shutout over the 49ers. Charlotte's Jessica Moore had three hits on the day and two in the 2-1 win over the Pack in the opening game. Freshman pitcher Kristen Bowen earned the win with eight allowed hits and seven strikeouts.
Despite the 2-1 score at the end of the first game, the end result came about after Moore hit her third home run of the season as the leadoff batter in the seventh inning. NC State had allowed the 49ers a run in the third inning, but tied it up in the fourth, 1-1. Freshman pitcher Shaina Ervin, who struckout six and allowed eight hits in the loss, singled to get on base. Freshman Moffatt Steele stepped in to pinch run for Ervin. Freshman Caroline Blount singled and was followed by a sac bunt from freshman Jessica Willems to move both around the bases. With Moffatt at third, junior Lee Hasper earned a single herself to score Steele. The next two innings went scoreless and ended at the top of the seventh as Moore sent one high over the left field fence. The Pack put two on the bases, but were left stranded and with the loss.
But as it turned out, just as the season has gone, NC State stepped it up at bat and in the circle to send the 49ers home with an 8-0 shutout. Third baseman Chamberlin made good on her at bats with a home run, a walk and a single. She capped that with two runs as well. Freshman Heather Gelbard tallied two hits, a run and a RBI. Her second inning blow was a ground rule double as it hopped over the left center fence. Blount was also offensively productive with two runs, two singles and a RBI. Sims pitched five innings after the eight-run rule stifled play. She took down 11 batters of the 16 at bats and allowed just two hits.
NC State will travel to Georgia Tech for the Buzz Classic set for Friday, March 19 through Sunday, the 21st in Atlanta, Ga. NC State gets rolling at 1 p.m. on Friday against Bowling Green.
