RALEIGH, N.C. - It was record-setting day at Doak Field on Saturday as Vern Sterry and Joey Devine set NC State school records in the Wolfpack's 5-4 college baseball victory over Northeastern at Doak Field. Sterry set a school record with his 14th consecutive victory, his third of the season, shattering a mark held since 1986 by lefthander Robert Toth. Devine pitched the ninth inning to record his seventh save of the season and the 21st of his career, shattering Brian Bark's school record for career saves, set from 1987-90.
The Wolfpack won its third consecutive game and improved to 13-3 for the season. Northeastern dropped to 6-4.
Sterry (3-0) pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing tow runs, one of them earned, on six hits. He struck out 11 and did not walk a batter. He has now faced 89 consecutive batters without issuing a walk. Sterry retired the first nine men he faced, seven of them on strikes, and 12 of the first 13. Huskies starter Justin Hedrick (1-1) worked seven solid innings and pitched well enough to win most games. He allowed five runs, two of which were unearned, on 10 hits. He walked two and struck out four.
NC State started the scoring early. Matt Camp led off the bottom of the first, singled to left and advanced to second when Hedrick walked Bryan Kinneberg. Camp scored on a single by David Hicks to put the first run on the board. Kinneberg and Hicks advanced a base on a wild pitch, and Kinneberg scored on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Knight.
Kinneberg led off the bottom of the third with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Knight reached first on an error by shortstop Arman Sidhu, and Maynor cleared the bases with a two-run double that split the gap and went off the wall in left center.
Hicks hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. to make the score 5-0.
Northeastern finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. Miguel Paquette hit a two-out double, and was driven in on a double by Matt Morizino.
The Huskies added another run in the eighth inning. Sidhu doubled and went to third on an errant pickoff throw by Sterry. Paul Koslowski knocked in Sidhu with a single to left. Daniel Caldwell came in to relieve Sterry and record the final out of the inning.
Devine entered the contest with a three-run cushion in the top of the ninth, and wobbled through, allowing a pair of runs on three hits, but notching the save. After striking out Tim Bush leading off the inning, Devine allowed a solo home run to Paquette. Morizio went down looking, but Brian Nutting doubled with two outs, and Brad Czarnowski singled to right to drive in Nutting. Sidhu went down swinging to end the game.
NC State has won the first two games of this three-game series, the final game of which will be played on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m.
