CHARLESTON, S.C. - Jason St. Julien stroked a two-run single up the middle with two out in the top of the eighth inning to lead NC State to a 6-4 victory over College of Charleston in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Riley Park.
The Wolfpack won for the sixth time in as many games, while the Cougars fell to 5-2. Freshman righthander Adam McLaurin (2-0) was the winning pitcher after allowing one run, unearned, on two hits in two innings of relief. He walked none and struck out one. Charleston starter Reid Price (0-1) allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out six.
NC State broke from the gates quickly with three runs in the top of the first inning. Matt Camp led off and reached on an error, and St. Julien followed with a towering home run to left-center, his second of the season, to make it 2-0. Dustin Knight ripped a triple off the wall in right-center, and Mike Jensen cashed in the RBI with a line single up the middle, giving the Wolfpack and starter Gib Hobson a 3-0 after a half-inning.
College of Charleston answered with a run in the bottom of the second on a leadoff homer to right-center by Brett Anderson, his second of the year, but the Wolfpack averted further damage with some nice defensive work. With runners at second and third and one away, Chris Campbell dribbled a grounder to the right side of the mound. Wolfpack starter Gib Hobson quickly pounced on the ball and flipped to catcher Jake Muyco, who put the tag on Jess Easterling, who attempted to score form third on the play. Hobson struck out Brett Gardner to end the inning.
Camp led off the top of the third with a double off the glove of a diving Bryon Barber in left field and took third on St. Julien's groundout. Price walked Dustin Knight, and ball four got away from the catcher for a wild pitch that allowed Camp to score and give NC State a 4-1 lead.
Gardner led off the bottom of the fifth for the Cougars and was hit by a pitch. Phillip Coker hit a slow roller to shortstop. A balk was called on Hobson's delivery, and the Wolfpack defense, appraently thinking that the ball was automatically dead on the balk, did not react to the grounder. But the pitch was part of Hobson's delivery home, so the batting team had the option to take the play, giving College of Charleston a base hit that put runners on first and second with none out. Bryon Barber bunted the runners to second and third. Mark Lyons' bloop single to shallow left drove in Gardner, and Anderson's grounder to shortstop drove in Coker, cutting the NC State lead to 4-3 after five innings.
The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Barber led off with a single to right and went to second on a sacrifice by Lyons. McLaurin's errant pickoff attempt allowed Barber to go to third, and Easterling's suicide squeeze bunt tied the score at 4-4.
Muyco led off the top of the eighth with a walk and Jonathan Diaz was hit by a pitch. Camp bunted the runners to second and third, prompting a pitching change from College of Charleston. St. Julien greeted reliever Barry Richardson with a single up the middle, through the drawn-in infield, driving in both runners and giving NC State a 6-4 lead.
