AMES, Iowa - Fourth-ranked Iowa State dismantled NC State, 45-0 Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones got two major decisions, two technical falls, two pins and an injury default as the Wolfpack did not win a single bout for the first time since a 46-0 loss vs. Oklahoma at the start of the 2002-03 season.
With the dual starting at heavyweight, 13th-ranked Scott Coleman ignited the Cyclones to a 4-0 lead with a major decision over Jainor Palma. Next at 125 pounds, ISU's Grant Nakamura increased his season record to 13-9 by pinning Jeremy Hartrum in 2:51.
Third-ranked Zach Roberson sustained the Cyclone momentum with a 19-2 technical fall at the 4:26 mark over Garrett Cummings at 133. Sophomore Jesse Sundell, wrestling at 141 pounds for Nate Gallick, capitalized on a rare start by earning a pin in 2:18 over Alex Hernandez.
The ISU lead ballooned to 28-0 as redshirt freshmen Trent and Travis Paulson took care of business at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. The fifth-ranked Trent defeated two-time ACC champion Jake Giamoni 5-3, and Travis followed with a 16-2 major decision over Bryant Reams, who was subbing for the injured and 15th-ranked Scott Garren.
Eighth-ranked Nick Passolano avenged a major decision suffered last year against Dustin Kawa at 165 pounds with a 1-0 decision. At 174pounds, Grant Turner defeated Rick Brownlee 20-4 to earn the technical fall and run NC State's deficit to 36-0.
Tenth-ranked Kurt Backes accounted for six points at 184 pounds with an injury default over Daniel Humphries. Backes led 9-2 in the second period before Humphries suffered a recurrence of a previous leg injury. Iowa State's Trevor Smith finished the night off with a 7-2 decision over Scott Garren at 197 pounds.
NC State closes out the regular season on Wednesday, February 25 at Duke. The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament will be Saturday, March 6, at Charlottesville, Va.
