Raleigh, N.C. - Best known for his coaching success at Duke in the 1960s, Vic Bubas will also forever be linked with one trivia question: who scored the first basket at Reynolds Coliseum? Bubas, a standout player for one of Everett Case's early teams at NC State, and former Wolfpack guard Chris Corchiani will be among nine legends who will be honored at this year's ACC Men's Basketball Tournament, March 11-14 at the Greensboro Coliseum. As part of the festivities, a special "Legends Brunch" will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13 at the Coliseum's Special Events Center.
The ACC Legends Brunch will feature three hosts this year in ABC and Raycom Sports TV announcer Tim Brant, former Georgia Tech head basketball coach and current Raycom announcer Bobby Cremins and current Jefferson-Pilot and Fox Sports South TV personality Mike Hogewood.. A limited amount of tickets are available for the Brunch, priced at $35 with tables of 10 available for $350, and may be obtained by calling the Greensboro Coliseum Box Office at 336-373-7413.
Before going on to coach Duke to three Final Four appearances and four ACC Tournament titles in 10 years, Bubas was one of the early pillars that would help to build NC State into a southeastern basketball powerhouse through the decade of the 1950s. After his playing days, he then went on to serve as an assistant under Case before taking the Duke job in May of 1959.
Corchiani, who made up one half of the famed "Fire and Ice" backcourt combo with Rodney Monroe from 1988-91, ended his career as college basketball's all-time assist leader and still ranks third to this day. Now a Raleigh resident and fixture at NC State home games, Corchiani ranks second on the ACC's all-time steals list with an average of 2.86 thefts in 124 career games.
Along with Bubas and Corchiani, seven other legends will be recognized for their achievements during the "Legends Brunch" on March 13:
Vincent Hamilton, Clemson
Lennie Rosenblooth, North Carolina
Tom Hammonds, Georgia Tech
Bryant Stith, Virginia
Adrian Branch, Maryland
Jack Murdock, Wake Forest
Brad Johnson, Florida State
