Orlando, Fla. - Sophomore Cullen Jones had a successful week at the USA Swimming National Championships held in Orlando, Florida February 10th - 14th. Swimming in the 50 meter freestyle, he finished 20th place in a time of 23.37 seconds. The youngest swimmer in the final heats, his time qualifies him to take part in the United States Swimming Olympic Trials held in Long Beach, California from July 7th - 14th.
"This was a pretty big swim for Cullen," NC State assistant coach Chad Onken said. "Our focus is on the upcoming collegiate championship meets (ACC's and NCAA's), so for him to come down here and get his Olympic Trial qualifying out of the way, it is pretty huge. There was a star studded field of international superstars and American Olympians in this event, so getting top-20 is a big step in his development."
"I'm happy about getting my Trial cut, and even more excited to finally shave and taper for ACC's in a few more days," Jones said."
The NC State men's swimming and diving team will compete in the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va. from February 25-28 and will hopefully qualify for the NCAA Championships, March 25-27. The women's swimming and diving team will compete in the ACC Championships, February 18-21.
