ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Garrett Cummings won the championship at 125 pounds, and juniors Chris DeLuca and Kevin Gabrielson turned in runner-up finished at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively, as the NC State wrestling team came in a strong third place at the Navy Invitational on Saturday, November 20.
The host Midshipmen, who won five of the 10 individual championships and placed six wrestlers in the finals, easily won the team championship with 202.5 points. ACC rival Virginia Tech was second with 152 points, followed by the Wolfpack with 126, Rutgers with 122.5, and 10th-ranked West Virginia with 90.5 points. George Mason (69.5), Duquesne (30.5) and Campbell (1) rounded out the eight-team field.
"I'm really pleased with the way we wrestled," NC State head coach Carter Jordan said. "The kids wrestled well. This was a very tough, experienced field. Navy has a really good team, and Virginia Tech is going to be a challenge in our conference. I really liked the way our kids competed. We have a lot of work to do and a long ways to go, but we're going to keep getting better."
NC State, 1-1 in dual matches prior to this weekend, will be off until the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, December 3-4.
