NC State softball won three games on the opening day of the NC State Fall Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Wolfpack dropped UNC-Pembroke 1-0, before winning 15-0 over Mt. Olive College and 16-0 over Queens University. Three Wolfpack pitchers combined to allow only two hits on the afternoon, with freshman Megan Dalthorp pitching a no-hitter against Mt. Olive.
Freshman Shanna Smith hit a solo homerun against Pembroke for the winning run in game one. The run was all the Wolfpack would need, as sophomore Shaina Ervin allowed only one hit, an infield single, while striking out seven to get the win. Sophomores Jen Chamberlin and Heather Gelbard picked up the other two Wolfpack hits in the game.
The Wolfpack offense showed up in game two, collecting 17 hits and scoring 15 runs against Mt. Olive, as Dalthorp no-hit the Spartans. She struckout five and allowed only one baserunner, a walk in the third inning, for the complete game win.
NC State scored at least four runs in three different innings and batted around in the second and sixth innings. Gelbard leadoff in game two, hitting a single and a two-run double to finish 2-3. Freshman Brooke Isley collected two hits and scored a run, while sophomore Jess Willems went 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI single. Freshman shortstop Lisa Nentwig collected three hits in four appearances, scoring three runs in the game.
In the final game of the afternoon, Isley got the start, allowing only a single in the fifth as she went five innings for the win. The Wolfpack would bat around in the order in the third and fourth innings, collecting 11 runs on 12 hits combined in the two innings. Gelbard and sophomore Abbie Sims each hit two-out homeruns for the Wolfpack, and freshman Blair Harkey scored three runs to pace the Pack. Junior second baseman Tess Corona went 3-3 at the top of the order, as the Wolfpack rolled over Queens University 16-0.
Sims hit a three-run homerun to left-center that was belted over the fence to stake the Wolfpack to a 4-0 advantage. Gelbard would hit a two-run homerun to the same spot over the wall in the third with two outs to push the lead to 8-0.
NC State will play two more contests at the tournament to wind down the fall season, facing the East Carolina Pirates at noon before closing against Belmont Abbey at 2 pm.
