CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The NC State women's golf team got off to a slow start Friday in the first round of the Franklin Street Partners Invitational. The Wolfpack shot 29-over-par at the par 72, 6,285-yard Finley Golf Course and is in ninth place of nine teams. Colby Cobb led the Wolfpack with a five-over score in the opening round and is tied for 22nd place.
Teeing off from the tenth hole, NC State had a tough time on the back nine. The Wolfpack improved by 20 strokes on the front nine to close the gap with eighth place South Carolina to two strokes. NC State will begin the second round Saturday at 9:00 a.m. from the tenth tee again.
Molly Birmingham trails Cobb by one stroke and is tied for 26th place. After firing six-over on the back nine, the junior shot par on the front. Nancy Mountcastle is seven-over after one round and is tied for 27th place. The sophomore birdied three holes on the day. Lorraine Ballerano and Ashlee Dean are both 11-over after day one. Dean got in a pretty big hole after going nine-over on the back nine, but managed to salvage the round by only carding a two-over total on the front.
Duke leads the talented field at six-over and Maggie Simons from Wake Forest is in first place individually at three-under. Play resumes Saturday with the second round and the tournament concludes Sunday with a final round of 18 holes. Complete results and live scoring are availabe at www.golfstat.com.
