Jed Paulsen, one of the veteran leaders of the NC State football team, will be lost for several weeks after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle on Tuesday. The senior center was injured early in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game at North Carolina. With Paulsen now on the shelf, Leroy Harris, the starter at left guard, will move over to center with James Newby taking over at his vacated guard spot.
"They put a couple of pins in to stabilize the ankle," Wolfpack head coach Chuck Amato said in announcing the surgical procedure performed on Paulsen. "He actually came out; as soon as he was released he wanted to come to practice."
Amato said there was a possibility Paulsen could return before the end of the regular season.
"If anybody can, he will," Amato said. "You remember what he did two years ago with that ACL."
Despite tearing the ACL in one of his knees during the 2002 season, Paulsen actually returned, helping the Pack win the Gator Bowl. He had surgery after the season.
Although Newby will start at left guard, there's a chance senior Rickey Fowler could also see action in Saturday's 3:30 game at Maryland. Fowler, who underwent knee surgery during the off-season, played 19 snaps against UNC last weekend.
