NC State Rifle Team Excels in Spring Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Last Saturday, January 24th, the NC State rifle team began the spring semester on a positive note, winning their fourth SEARC conference match of the year in Spartanburg, S.C. Led by freshmen Jennifer Marshall, Matthew Gifford, and Kirk Freeman, the Wolfpack shot 1,514 to improve to 31-2 overall and 20-2 in SEARC competition.
Sophomore Christine Kimball and junior Tammy Montgomery both fired personal best match scores for the year of 374 and 361 respectively. The Wolfpack proved to be the strongest and deepest of the competition with five shooters finishing in the top 10 finals event. Marshall, Gifford, and Freeman competed for first place with respective scores of 381, 380, and 378. Junior co-captain John Maroglio capped off the evening with a 375 score. Junior Ryan Dorety also assisted in the team victory with a score of 366.
The victory extended leads against conference rivals The Citadel (1,496) and Birmingham Southern College (1,491). Other teams rounding out the competition include: Clemson (1,479), NGCSU (1,367), Wofford (1,224), and Mercer (1,161). Augusta State University, brand new to the conference as of this year, had two shooters competing but were unable to form a team for the match.
The NC State rifle team will be competing again this Sunday in Raleigh as part of the Triangle Shoot Out.
