Wolfpack Men Defeat Duke, 146-85

DURHAM, N.C. - NC State defeated Duke in men's swimming by a strong 146-85 margin, led by first place finishes in 11 of the 13 events including a sweep by freshman standout Vitor Assuncao in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competition. He turned in a 366.6 in the 3-meter and a 364.2 in the 1-meter competition in Durham, N.C. on Jan. 19. Junior Chris Nixon, sophomore Cullen Jones, sophomore Scott Dettloff, senior Jorge Gutierrez, sophomore Robert Terrell, junior Peter Pessagno and junior Rob Yeager each placed first in various events.
In the 400 Medley Relay, the 'A' team of Terrell, Yeager, Jones and Dettloff picked up 11 points for placing first with a time of 3:28.86, while NC State 'B' (junior Kevin Devine, sophomore Rick Scott, sophomore Andy Bauman and junior Jack Deal) finished third with a time of 3:30.67 to earn two team points.
Nixon finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.85 while teammate Yeager finished a close second, only less than one half second back with a time of 1:46.08. Yeager won the 200 yard breast stroke with a time of 2:05.41. Nixon finished second in the 500 freestyle swim with a time of 4:42.58.
Pessagno won the 500 free with a time of 4:41.25, while Hoffman (4th, 4:41.62) picked up two points. Jones won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.10 while sprinters Terrell and Dettloff placed third and fourth, respectively.
Dettloff placed 1st with a time of 1:55.92 in the 200 butterfly, Gutierrez won the 100 free with a time of 47.93, while Robert Terrell won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:53.87.
